Le Mont Saint Michel, located about three hours and thirty minutes away from Paris is certainly one of the most celebrated pilgrimage sites in France. It is the second most visited place after Paris. Each year, 3 million pilgrims and visitors pay homage to this majestic landmark. Due to its historical and cultural significance, it was named a Unesco Heritage site in 1979.

Overall look of the castle

You’ll find yourself in great awe by its breathtaking view and impressive Gothic inspired architecture. It is as if you were transported in the medieval times where nobilities, royalties and fairy tales exist.

What’s the story?

Legend has it that the Archangel Michel appeared to St. Aubert, Bishop of Avranches in 708 telling him to build a church on Mont Saint-Michel, which was then called Mont Tombe. Church was opened on Mont Tombe on Oct. 16, 709.

How to get there?

So maybe by now you are wondering how to get to this island fortress. For car owners, travel time from Paris to Mont Saint Michel Abbey is three hours and thirty minutes (more comfortable than taking the train I must say). Parking wouldn't be that hard since you can have a secure space for only 11.70€ (24hrs). A shuttle bus will take you from the parking lot to the Mont in 10 minutes tops!

If you prefer the train, you can take our fastest train Train à Grande Vitesse (TGV) from Gare Montparnasse until you reach Gare Pontorsson in two hours and fifteen minutes! Tickets would cost you 68€ for a one way trip. From the train station, there is an available shuttle bus that will take you to the abbey for an additional cost.

Fun fact! There's also a horse carriage or what we call 'maringote' that would add that majestic feel (make way for the Queen). Riding the carriage with other people comes with a price of 5.30€ while renting it in private would cost you 158€.

Savor the Moment

For first-timers like me, it wouldn't be too difficult and fully understand the history and explore the abbey itself. For only 10€, you get to see the Abbey, Monks cloister, Monks ambulatory, and a lot more. You can even explore the place in your own pace. For an additional 3 €, you can have an audio guide in your preferred language.

The place offers a 3-hour coastal hike up to Tombelaine Island, the perfect spot to view the bay in all its splendor. It is advisable to be physically fit before taking this challenge.

Tourists strolling around the Abbey

Truth be told, this is THE weekend of all weekend getaways. If you want to immerse yourself in a spiritual journey, or travel back in time and witness majestic beauty, then this is the place to be.
